Equal access requires more than just handicapped parking.

The handicapped parking at the Northlake McDonald’s in Tucker, Georgia is very accessible because it’s right next to the building, and it’s actually van-accessible.
  • However, at the Tucker McDonald’s on Lawrenceville Highway, handicapped parking isn’t next to the building. Instead it’s across the parking lot, which forces disabled patrons into oncoming traffic.

However, on either side of the cut-through, there’s the rough-surfaced indicator that signals to the visually-impaired that there’s safe access, but this would lead to a drop off the curb.

There are some tall tables inside the Tucker Burger King. They’re almost like barstools so a wheelchair can go under the table and you can eat at the table instead of next to the table.

At the Tucker location of The Hudson Grille there are only two handicapped parking spaces, but one of the spaces was in a perpetual pool of 6-inch deep water. The culvert couldn’t drain water because it was elevated above the pool. The culvert was pushed up from root growth from the tree—as the root grew under the culvert toward a perpetual water source.

The perpetual water source came from a gutter from the top of the building that emptied out onto the sidewalk and would then run off into the handicapped parking area that never drained because of the elevated culvert. Besides rain and other precipitation, the building’s HVAC system was also on the roof where AC condensation provided a perpetual water source for the pool.

A call and email to the Hudson Grille corporate office resulted in a fix. The culvert was replaced, but first the tree roots were cut out. Since the root growth pushed up the culvert to beginning with, the tree was removed altogether to prevent future culvert damage.

These follow-up pictures were taken on a rainy day, but they illustrate the fix was made. There’s no more pool. We endorse The Hudson Grille.
